Ullswater and the Lake District National Park

The beauty of the Lake District is really beyond words. Wordsworth, Wainwright and many others have described many aspects of this beautiful corner of the world, but you need to experience it for yourself.

Ullswater is the Lake District's second largest lake - and we think it is the most beautiful. The backdrop to Ullswater is the majestic fells that have always inspired poets, artists and walkers. And it still has the same effect today - in winter and in summer. Stybarrow Cottage is ideally located for exploring the Lake District National Park and the Ullswater valley. From the cottage door Helvellyn, High Street, Fairfield and Place Fell can all be reached on foot. There is also a wide choice of water based activities, including Ullswater Steamers, boat hire and Glenridding sailing school. And you can explore all this from our holiday cottage. But enough of our blurb, we'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

What can you find in Glenridding and the local area?

Our self catering cottage is located at the heart of the village of Glenridding which is on the southern shores of Ullswater. The history of the village is closely linked to Greenside mine and farming - there is a small exhibition about Greenside mine in the Information Centre. You're only a few minutes' walk from all the village amenities:

* 3 village pubs within 5 minutes walk - and the Travellers Rest is just 2 minutes up the road.
* numerous cafes with a scrumptious range of cakes, snacks and meals for all tastes. Kilners cafe near the Glenridding hotel also has internet access.
* 2 village shops, a post office and an outdoor shop (Catstycam) - in case you've forgotten anything.
* a garage with a repair centre - and a National Lottery terminal!
* a medical centre which you hopefully won't need, but it's just round the corner.
* a National Park Information Centre for all the info you need about what to do and where to go.
* Ullswater steamers and Glenridding sailing centre - for getting out and about on the lake.
